Katherine McNamara has been cast as the female lead in “Shadowhunters,” ABC Family’s saga series based on the “Mortal Instruments” book series. The cabler announced the news Wednesday.
McNamara — who’s becoming a familiar face to the network, as she’ll also recur in the third season of ABC Family’s family drama “The Fosters” — will star opposite Dominic Sherwood (“Vampire Academy”) who nabbed the male lead role, as fellow Shadowhunter Jace.
The supernatural series focuses on Clary Fray (McNamara) who gets a surprise piece of family history as a birthday present: she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters, human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. After her mother is kidnapped, Clary discovers that vampires, werewolves and other spooky creatures do exist as she quickly learns to navigate this new world.
Previously announced, Alberto Rosende and Emeraude Toubia round out the cast, respectively, as Simon, Clary’s best friend, and Isabelle, an beautiful and well-trained Shadowhunter.
In the 2013 feature film adaptation of the novel, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” Lily Collins played Clary and Jamie Campbell Bower played Jace.
McNamara is popular among the ABC Family demo for playing Harper on MTV’s short-lived “Happyland” last year, recurring on Disney’s “Kickin’ It” and “Jessie,” and co-starring in Disney Channel Original Movie “Girl vs. Monster.” She will also appear in the upcoming “Maze Runner” flick, “The Scorch Trials.”
McNamara is repped by Atlas Artists, CESD, and Jackoway, Tyerman, Wertheimer, Austen, Mandelbaum, Morris & Klein.
“Shadowhunters” is produced by Constantin Film and exec produced by Ed Decter and McG, who will also direct the first episode.
