Sam Brinton has been arrested after being accused of stealing another person’s luggage.
Sam Brinton, who started working in June as the DOE’s deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel and waste disposition, is charged with stealing a bag from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s baggage claim area, according to a criminal complaint submitted on October 27 to Minnesota’s 4th Judicial District Court.
By email on Monday, a DOE spokesperson declined to comment. Brinton did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did Fabian Hoffner, a lawyer in Minneapolis who represents Brinton.
In September, just before covertly taking a leave of absence, Sam Brinton, a senior Energy Department (DOE) official, was accused of stealing a traveler’s luggage at the Minneapolis airport.
According to a criminal complaint submitted on October 26 in Minnesota state court and obtained by Fox News Digital, Brinton, who works as the DOE’s deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel and waste disposition, is accused of stealing a Vera Bradley suitcase valued at $2,325 from the luggage carousel at the Minneapolis St. Paul Airport (MSP) on September 16.

Brinton had made the trip to MSP that day from Washington, D.C.
Brinton is accused of stealing another person’s luggage and could spend up to five years in prison and pay a $10,000 fine.
According to court documents, after the suitcase owner called the Police, officers looked over footage of the luggage carousel. They saw Brinton taking the suitcase before taking off its owner-identifying tag.
Law enforcement saw Brinton using the luggage on at least two additional trips to Washington, D.C., on September 18 and October 9.
When a Police officer called to discuss the incident, Brinton denied stealing anything. Brinton acknowledged still having the bag.
Sam told the officer that if he had taken the wrong bag, he would be happy to return it, but he didn’t have any clothes for another person. When he opened the bag, he revealed that those were his clothes.
Brinton apologized for not being “completely honest” in a follow-up call to the officer two hours after the initial call. However, Brinton admitted that it was a mistake and said he had chosen the incorrect bag at the carousel because he was tired.
The court documents stated that the defendant claimed they discovered the bag was not theirs when they opened it at the hotel. DEFENDANT claimed they had left the bag of clothing in the hotel room’s drawers.
Brinton was ultimately accused of felony theft of movable property without consent, which carries a potential sentence of five years in prison, a fine of $10,000, or both.
According to newsunzip.com, Sam Brinton’s net worth in 2023 is estimated to be $1 million.
Brinton is the Office of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition’s Deputy Assistant Secretary. Sam is in charge of NE-8 and its programs, including the Office of Integrated Waste Management and Spent Fuel and Waste Science and Technology.
High-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel are both managed by NE-8 through ongoing research and development.
Sam’s office is currently focused on determining whether direct disposal of dual-purpose casks is feasible, implementing research on large-scale, and creating a consent-based siting process for federal interim storage of spent nuclear fuel.
